TMJ self massage Lower your jaw and place your thumb against your inner cheek (inside your mouth) and your fingers against your outer cheek. Your thumbnail should rest against your teeth. Next, bite down gently. The masseter muscle should pop up under your thumb and fingers as it contracts. Then separate the teeth. Massage this muscle up and down your cheek from the inside and outside to relieve tension. If you find a spot that is particularly painful, maintain constant, gentle pressure until it softens and/or the pain eases. Gentle heat before and after self massage if possible.
