Log Roll This technique is to be performed when sitting up at the edge of the bed after abdominal surgery. It can be performed on your own flat or reclined/propped up and/or with assistance. First, bend both of your knees with your feet flat on the bed. Next, roll all the way onto your side moving your legs and trunk as a single unit (like a log). Next, drop your legs off the side of the bed and use your arms to assist in pushing yourself up to sitting at the edge of the bed. To get back to bed, reverse the previous steps by lying down on your side first and then rolling onto your back and straightening your knees. This is important for protecting your abdominal incisions and weakened muscles following surgery and will reduce pain and fatigue with getting up from bed.
