Proper Side Sleeping The neck and low back have a similar curve and when sleeping on side, due to the anatomy of our shoulders and hips we need to fill in the spaces for support. This is especially important on softer beds. Fold up small hand towel about an inch thick and place it between bottom of ribs and top of waist line. The shoulder should never be on the pillow. Place similar size towel inside the pillow case under the bottom of the pillow to fill in this gap. Pillow between knees helps prevent hip from adducting and placing more frontal plane stresses on spine.
